GHK has continued to be commissioned by the company to undertake alterations, upgrades and interventions to the working historic distillery situated in the heart of Plymouth’s barbican area. The 16th century Distillery retains many beautiful features, so careful detailing is always required to meet the modern requirements of the company within the development.
Recent projects have included inputting historical specialist advice to the design team for the new major visitor centre. GHK have designed the new 1920’s inspired bar to the Refectory lounge as well as a large number of general enhancements throughout the complex, all undertaken without detrimental effect to the building.
A major fire destroyed part of the complex which required a sensitive approach when rebuilding. Historic fabric not destroyed was retained and GHK ensured it formed part of the reconstruction, thereby ensuring the historical development was not totally lost. The rebuild allowed a replacement multi functional Laboratory and staff accommodation to be created, whilst retaining the original overall proportions of the lost wing.
Current projects involve a new lighting scheme to the shop and a major upgrading of the restaurant kitchen.
